A Beacon of Hope: Overstrand Whale Boxing Club's Journey to Empowerment and Success

In the heart of Hermanus, South Africa, there stands more than just a building with a boxing ring and gym equipment. The new Overstrand Whale Boxing Club represents a story of resilience, dedication, and profound impact on the community it serves.

Founded in 2004 by Mzi Damesi, the club began in a tumbledown house with basic equipment, symbolizing a beacon of hope for the youth living in the nearby townships, particularly in Zwelihle. Stemming from his own childhood where boxing at the age of eight gave him purpose, Damesi aimed to offer the same escape to the children in his community who were surrounded by drug and alcohol issues.

Fast forward to nearly two decades later, what was once a dim vision has now illuminated into a sophisticated facility inside the Hermanus Waldorf School, thanks to the generous sponsorship from the Elizabeth Margaret Steyn (EMS) Foundation. The new boxing club, celebrated and inaugurated on November 25 under the inclusive vision of Steyn, is now home to 45 dedicated students. It's not just a place for physical training; it's a refuge where some even do their homework, highlighting the role education plays alongside sport in shaping the future of these young individuals.

Damesi's initiative was made necessary by the township's challenges and was bolstered by the immense support from the EMS Foundation that extends far beyond financial assistance. The symbiotic relationship between the boxing club and the Waldorf school is evident in the expanded educational facilities, which now accommodate students up to grade 10, thanks to additional classrooms and ablution facilities funded by the foundation.

This partnership is grounded in more than physical structure—it's about building a stronger, more resilient community. A stark contrast to the days when fighters from the club would travel to Cape Town by hitchhiking for tournaments, sometimes with no assured return trip, sleeping under bridges. The donation of a taxi by the EMS in 2018 marks a significant upgrade, ensuring safe transportation and reflecting the commitment to the children's welfare.

Despite the progress, the battle is not yet won. Damesi points out the necessity for more equipment to fully utilize the potential of the gym and to aid in the training of the boxers. Success stories, such as Siphamandla Damesi's victories in national championships, showcase the fruits of these labors and the promise of what could be achieved with continued support and sponsorship from local businesses and the broader community.

The transformation from a shack into the current gym, with a brief layover in containers provided by the Overstrand Municipality, is indeed inspirational.
