Oudtshoorn's pioneering Government of Local Unity (GLU) has marked half a year of impressive governance, setting a novel example of collaboration and progress in South African local governance. Comprising the ANC, VF Plus, OGI, Advice Office, and PA, this coalition governs 60% of Oudtshoorn's municipal council with a focus on tangible improvements for its constituents.

The GLU's achievements under the leadership of Executive Mayor Johan Allers, Speaker Suzane Jansen, and Deputy Mayor Mziwoxolo Tyatya have been multifaceted and impactful. Within just six months, the coalition has spearheaded the restoration of critical infrastructure, which includes the long-awaited repair of streetlights in De Rust and significant road repairs town-wide, despite the challenges posed by the ageing underlying infrastructure.

Environmental stewardship was prioritized with the "Ek help ook" river cleanup initiative, which not only engaged the community but also revitalized local ecosystems, with 30% of the project completed thus far. The initiative reflects the GLU’s commitment to sustainable practices and community involvement.

The role of the GLU in emergency responses and housing has been equally proactive. Following discussions with the Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, the municipality has expedited emergency housing aid and initiated important asbestos roof replacement projects to safeguard resident health. Moreover, to accommodate the ongoing need for safe housing, the Spekkop housing project is set to launch in mid-2025, complemented by negotiations for additional land acquisitions that promise to alleviate housing shortages sustainably.

Infrastructure development has seen a substantial injection of resources, with R65 million secured from the Treasury for crucial upgrades. This fund will enhance the town’s waste management capabilities, flood prevention infrastructure, and road maintenance efforts. The municipality’s shift towards modernity is further demonstrated by the adoption of a paperless billing system, which reduces municipal expenses and environmental impact.

The cultural life of Oudtshoorn has also flourished under the GLU, with the return of the iconic Frieda Barnard Gala and a successful community-wide Christmas event, further cementing the bond between residents and their governance.

Oudtshoorn’s GLU illustrates the profound impact of collaborative local governance. By focusing on infrastructure, environmental sustainability, and community welfare, the GLU is not only improving current living standards but is also laying down the groundwork for sustainable growth and community resilience.
