George Municipality Launches Comprehensive Campaign Against Illegal Dumping

The George Municipality in South Africa has initiated a daring stride towards sustainability with its latest Illegal Dumping Campaign unveiled on 13 December 2024. This initiative isn't just a run-of-the-mill program; it’s a comprehensive, well-funded campaign designed to tackle the persistent illegal dumping issues that tarnish the community's environment. With a budget of R16.34 million, the campaign's multi-faceted approach targets the root causes of waste mismanagement through public education, strict enforcement, and ongoing clean-up operations, setting a sustainable course for the future.

At the heart of this initiative is a significant educational component meant to shift local attitudes towards waste disposal, particularly in informal settlements where such practices are most common. The municipality plans to leverage its resources by employing 310 Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers along with 14 coordinators, spreading their reach across 12 strategic blocks within the municipal area. These teams are tasked with day-to-day waste management activities such as street sweeping, sidewalk cleaning, and bulky waste breakdown, bolstering the cleanliness and hygiene of the community space.

To truly localize the efforts, the municipality will introduce skips in critical wards starting March 2025, aimed at providing residents easier access to waste disposal points. Moreover, every household will be equipped with green refuse bags quarterly to encourage correct waste disposal habits. To support these clean-up operations, the municipality has also invested in advanced machinery such as TLBs and tipper trucks to efficiently manage more substantial waste like builders’ rubble and garden refuse.

One of the campaign's standout features is the integration of waste pickers into formal recycling programs. By collaborating with organizations like Polyco and Ewasa, the initiative will explore establishing buy-back centres, offering waste pickers trolleys and essential protective gear. This not only promotes recycling but also aids in providing sustainable livelihoods within the George community, making the campaign not just environmentally significant but also economically beneficial.

“Through sustained enforcement and active public participation, we can address illegal dumping comprehensively. It is a community issue, touching both environmental and social facets, and requires everyone’s participation,” said Marchell Kleynhans, the MMC for Community Services. With this statement, the campaign calls upon every resident of George to contribute to maintaining a pristine environment.
