The budding cricketers of Walmer Township in Gqeberha have a reason to rejoice as the locality witnessed the inauguration of three cricket nets aimed at nurturing young talent. Spearheaded by Gqeberha's own Malibongwe Maketa, a former South African cricketer, this initiative has seen his three-year vision culminate into a splendid reality at the Walmer sports precinct.

Malibongwe Maketa, who also leads the Cricket SA National Academy and the SA u.19 team, has brought the facility to life with the help of major sponsorship, notably from Boardwalk earlier this year. The support didn't end there; PPC Cement and Kelston Motors also contributed significantly to the cause.

The newly opened nets and artificial pitch, which was officially unveiled on October 28, represent more than just a sporting facility; they symbolize hope and progress for the youth of Walmer Township. The sports precinct has been buzzing with excitement, as children decorated in cricket-themed apparel eagerly awaited their turn to bowl and bat in the new nets. The youngest among them, a three-year-old, was particularly thrilled to exhibit his budding skills in the sport.

"I have seen the eager faces of the children playing cricket in our streets. There were no nets for them to practice properly, and I felt it was my responsibility to push for this project," Maketa expressed during the opening event. His goal is ambitious, as he aspires to see this local initiative evolve into a recognized hub supported by Cricket South Africa, creating a steady flow of skilled players for Eastern Province Cricket.

Community involvement has been heartwarming, with local resident Mazizonke Ngwendu offering to volunteer his coaching services to the youngsters. This sentiment is indicative of the collective aspiration to see the youths of Walmer Township excel in cricket.

Furthermore, the Boardwalk Hotel and Casino, symbolizing Sun International's commitment to this cause, has demonstrated its belief in the power of sports as a facet of education and as a pivotal tool in shaping the future of South Africa's youth. Tati Tsunke, the hotel and casino's general manager, expressed the organization's wish for the nets to become a wellspring of joy and a nursery for the country's future cricket stars.

This initiative stands as a beacon of community upliftment and the fostering of sports among the youth—a small but significant step toward ensuring that the passion for cricket in South Africa continues to flourish from the grassroots level.
