In a heart-wrenching event that occurred on Sunday in Heilbron, Free State, a family and their friends met with disaster when their vehicle was swept away by strong currents while attempting to cross the Kliprivier low-water bridge. This tragic incident ended in the loss of eight lives, including that of a two-year-old toddler.

The ill-fated trip began with the group travelling in a bakkie along the Welgeluk dirt road, with the intent of visiting a nearby farm within Heilbron district. Unfortunately, amid attempts to traverse the flooded bridge, the vehicle was overcome by the rapid waters, leading to the unthinkable.

Victims of this dreadful accident included the driver, Ditaba Isaac Mazibuko, 71, and his wife, Modiehi, 62. Their three grandchildren, Refilwe Jwalane Monyatsi, 14; Luyanda Zengele, 10, and Sibusiso Brain Zengele, 12, were also in the car, alongside Patrick Mquega, 34, a colleague, his wife Nthabiseng Agnes Toba, 33, and their young daughter Omphile Angela Toba.

Following the accident, a local farmer discovered the remnants of the vehicle the next morning, prompting an immediate search. Authorities, including police divers and K9 units, initiated a strenuous rescue operation. Despite their efforts, by Monday, all bodies were retrieved from the ravaging river.

Free State Police spokesperson Capt Loraine Earle detailed the preliminary investigation findings and stressed the perilous conditions. She expressed deep regret over the incident, emphasizing the deceitful nature of strong water currents during floods.

"As part of our community responsibility, we remind everyone to avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges, or streams, no matter how shallow the water may appear. Fast-moving water can be misleading in both its depth and force," Capt Earle warned. Suggestions were made to seek alternative routes or wait until water levels have subsided before proceeding.

Lt-Gen Baile Motswenyane, Free State police commissioner, extended his condolences, reflecting on the profound grief that has impacted the community. An inquest docket has been opened to further investigate the circumstances of this tragic event.

This incident serves as a grim reminder of nature's unpredictability and the critical need for situational awareness during adverse weather conditions. The community of Heilbron, struck by this calamity, mourns the loss of their loved ones and calls for heightened vigilance to prevent future tragedies.
