The Western Cape Police have effectively executed various crime prevention operations yielding substantial results amidst the Safer Festive Season initiative. Arrests were made in Gugulethu and Parkwood on December 20, 2024, showcasing their diligent efforts to combat illicit activities in the region.
During a meticulously planned operation in the Kana Informal Settlement in Gugulethu at 22:10, Operation Shanela and Public Order Police members, engaging in crime prevention patrols, flagged a suspicious vehicle. Upon a thorough search of the Black Polo Vivo and its occupants, officers uncovered two firearms: a silver Norinco 9mm pistol and a Z88 pistol, both with serial numbers removed, along with 21 rounds of ammunition and an undisclosed sum of cash. The three individuals found in possession, aged between 26 and 40, were apprehended and are slated to appear at the Athlone Magistrates court.
Simultaneously, at 23:30, Grassy Park police, following leads on a wanted individual linked to an attempted murder case, made their way to Viljoen Walk in Parkwood. Their intervention led to the arrest of a 44-year-old man found with a .38 Rossi revolver and ammunition. The suspect is set to face the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court, solidifying the police's resolve in tracking and capturing individuals linked to violent crimes.
In a third unrelated event the same evening, Hermanus SAPS officers received a tip from the Overberg District Operational Command Centre about a White Ford Ranger with cloned plates from a Chevrolet Sonic. The vehicle, spotted by a License Plate Recognition camera, was intercepted at a petrol station in Sandbaai. The search of the vehicle led to the discovery of two unmarked pistols and additional rounds of ammunition, resulting in the arrest of two male occupants.
Collectively, all seized firearms are scheduled for ballistics analysis to establish links with other criminal activities and potentially solve outstanding cases. These operations underscore the proactive strides taken by the Western Cape police in ensuring community safety and curbing the cycle of violence and crime during the holiday season.
