The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Mykonos team, alongside South African National Parks (SANParks) rangers and several emergency service units, are currently involved in an extensive search for a missing teenager from Elsies River, Cape Town. The 16-year-old male was reported missing on Thursday, 2 January, after being swept away by strong rip currents at the Tsaarsbank Picnic Site near Vondeling Island in the scenic confines of the West Coast National Park.

According to Craig McGyver, the deputy station commander of NSRI Mykonos, the emergency response was activated at approximately 14:06 following distress calls from SANParks rangers. The teenager, who was on a holiday outing with his family and friends, found himself in a perilous situation while swimming and subsequently disappeared in the surf zone.

In a courageous but daunting attempt, the 22-year-old male partner of the teenager's sister tried to rescue him but also got caught in the strong rip currents. The NSRI rescue units, including the craft named Rotarian Burnett and the JetRib Hansie, were promptly deployed to the scene. They successfully rescued the 22-year-old man approximately 200 meters offshore. He was brought to Salamander Punt where he was attended by paramedics and SANParks rangers, thankfully requiring no further medical treatment.

Despite the successful rescue, the young teenager remains missing, and the search has broadened to include air, sea, and shoreline explorations. The operations consist of numerous parties including the SA Police Services Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS), WC Government Health Emergency Medical Services (EMS), West Coast Medical, and the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter which was activated to aid in the search.

As days pass, the community and the families involved grow increasingly distressed, but efforts have not waned. The NSRI has extended their gratitude towards SANParks and the various emergency personnel for their relentless dedication to the ongoing search and the initial rescue operations.

These tragic events serve as a poignant reminder of the dangers posed by rip currents, especially during peak holiday seasons when beaches are most frequented. Beachgoers are urged to heed the warnings and instructions provided by local authorities and to always swim in designated areas where lifeguards are present.
