An intensive search operation is currently underway for a 16-year-old teenager who went missing while swimming at East Beach in Port Alfred. The incident occurred on Thursday, December 5th, at approximately 14h37, prompting a quick response from local emergency services.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Port Alfred duty crew, along with the police and local beach authorities, sprang into action following the distressing reports. The NSRI launched their rescue craft, Spirit of Kenton, and deployed rescue swimmers to the site. The SA Police Services, along with Ndlambe Municipal and Beach officials, are also actively involved, focusing on a thorough sea and shoreline search.

According to eyewitnesses, the teenager was part of a group from Soweto, Gauteng, who were in Port Alfred to attend a sports event. It has been reported that the group, along with their two carers who are also their coaches, decided to take a swim at the beach, which was not related to their event. Tragically, it was during this leisure activity that the teenager went missing. The coaches and other teenagers raised the alarm after they noticed the teenager was no longer visible.

Despite the extensive and ongoing efforts by the NSRI and other agencies, there has been no sign of the teenager. The local police have now activated the K9 Search and Rescue to aid in the search, and a missing person’s case has been filed to coordinate these efforts better.

The community of Port Alfred and the teenager’s group from Soweto have been left shocked and distressed by this incident. Local authorities are currently working closely together, combing through the water and along the coastline, in hopes of locating the missing teen.

At this difficult time, the focus remains on the search and rescue operation, as well as providing support to the distraught family and friends of the missing teenager. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the potential dangers associated with swimming in the ocean, which can often present unpredictable and challenging conditions.

Local authorities are urging beachgoers to remain vigilant and to swim within designated safe areas under the watch of lifeguards. Community support has been overwhelming, with residents and visitors offering assistance and keeping the affected family in their thoughts.

As the search continues, updates will be provided as new information becomes available. The entire community holds its breath, hoping for the safe return of the young teenager.
