Quentin Power Honored with NSRI Gallantry Gold Award for Heroism During KZN Floods

Amid the lush landscape of Ballito, The Capital Zimbali was illuminated with commendation on the evening of 19 July. At the National Sea Rescue Institute's (NSRI) 57th Annual Awards Evening and AGM, a shimmering celebration unfolded, marking an unprecedented moment in the esteemed institution’s annals: the inaugural conferment of the Gold Gallantry awards.

The Gold Gallantry awards, an accolade of the highest caliber, are designated for those who exhibit valor in perilous circumstances. This year was particularly significant as it recognized the heroism evident during the devastating KwaZulu-Natal floods in April 2022 – a catastrophe that claimed over 435 lives and wrought incalculable destruction.

Among the awardees stood Quentin Power, a paragon of the bravery and commitment revered by the NSRI. His actions during the chaos of the floods were nothing short of heroic. Power's exemplary conduct in coordinating the rescues of numerous individuals from life-threatening situations placed him deservedly in the ranks of the Gold Gallantry honorees.

Power played an instrumental role in saving over 170 individuals, navigating treacherous conditions where people found themselves in dire predicaments, from the confinement of submerged vehicles to the precarious perch of building windows. One of the mission's critical junctures took place at the darkest hour of dawn when Power and his colleague, Johan Muller, encountered a security guard trapped within a drowning structure. With mere moments to spare and a rapidly closing window of survival, they managed to fracture the asbestos ceiling, pulling the guard to safety in a breathtaking rescue that epitomized their unwavering commitment.
