Garden Route District Reinforces Support for GBVF Victims with Upgraded Facilities at Kwanokuthula

In a significant step toward enhancing support for victims of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), the Garden Route District officially relaunched the Victim Friendly Room (VFR) at the Kwanokuthula SAPS station on March 5, 2025. This event marked a pivotal advancement in community and police relations and underscored a shared commitment to tackling these critical social issues.

Major General Phumzile Cetyana, the Garden Route District Commissioner, and Councillor Jessica Kamkam, the Executive Mayor of Bitou, led the ceremony, which was attended by an array of dignitaries including neighbouring station commanders, representatives from non-governmental organizations, community police forums, and local leaders, alongside community members.

The VFR is designed to provide victims of crime with essential services such as emotional support, practical assistance, and pertinent information and referrals to professional support services. This initiative was revitalized through robust partnerships with local businesses and the unyielding dedication of volunteers, emphasizing a community-centric approach to crime prevention and victim assistance.

During her heartfelt address, Councillor Kamkam highlighted the critical need for sustained cooperation between the police and the community to ensure that victims receive comprehensive and immediate support in the wake of crimes. She praised the collective effort that made the refurbishment of the VFR possible, signaling a significant step forward in community engagement and proactive leadership.

Major Gen Cetyana called on police personnel to diligently implement the Ministerial six-point plan, which is a cornerstone policy aimed at enhancing the treatment and protection of crime victims within the judicial system. The plan's elements are designed to ensure that all victims receive a uniform and dignified response when they engage with law enforcement, regardless of their background or identity.

In his concluding remarks, Maj Gen Cetyana stressed the importance of collaboration among police, government departments, NGOs, and the community to effectively combat GBVF. He underlined the duty of all stakeholders to respect and uphold the rights of victims, advocating for a discrimination-free approach in handling cases of crime.
