Search Continues for Missing French U/18 Rugby Player at Diaz Beach, Cape Point

The serene beauty of Diaz Beach at Cape Point was shattered by a harrowing event this past Wednesday when a young French rugby player vanished beneath the waves, prompting a full-scale rescue operation.

The 17-year-old, a member of the French U/18 rugby squad visiting Cape Point, was reportedly swept away by strong rip currents while swimming with his teammates. The incident unfolded around 3:16 pm, according to a call received by the National Sea Rescue Institute's Emergency Operations Centre (NSRI EOC) from rangers of Table Mountain National Parks (TMNP).

Witnesses from above the cliffs of Cape Point observed two individuals struggling in the dangerous surf zone. While one managed to return to shore unharmed, the other, unfortunately, did not emerge from the waters.

In response to the situation, a highly coordinated rescue mission ensued. The City of Cape Town's (CoCT) water rescue network, along with NSRI Simonstown and NSRI Hout Bay duty crews, were immediately dispatched. Cape Medical Response (CMR) supported the operation with an ambulance, a rescue vehicle, and a paramedic vehicle. Four NSRI rescue craft from Simonstown station 10 and Hout Bay station 8 were launched into the swells.

A heightened sense of urgency gripped the air as the South African Police Services (SAPS), NSRI rescue vehicles, and the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter with a Metro dive team joined the search. They focused their efforts along the shoreline and over the churning sea where 3 to 4-metre waves and 15 knot northerly winds compounded the challenge.

Despite the concerted efforts of all involved, including the Police Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS), the teenager remains unaccounted for as the search persists. The SAPS divers and an EMS Metro rescue squad remain on high alert, assisting in the ongoing efforts to locate the young man.

This tragic event has cast a shadow over the rugby team's visit, with profound grief and concern extended from family, friends, and teammates. The French authorities, in collaboration with the City of Cape Town tourism officials, are providing counselling and logistical support during this difficult time.

The unfolding story serves as a solemn reminder of nature's power and the importance of water safety measures, especially in areas known for unpredictable currents.
