A dramatic rescue unfolded at Lagoon Beach in Milnerton, as two lifeguards from the Milnerton Surf Lifesaving Club heroically saved two men and their pets from the grips of a strong sea current. The incident, which took place at approximately 5:30 pm on Tuesday evening, had locals on the edge of their seats as the victims, including a Milnerton local, battled the ocean's might near the lagoon’s mouth.

Reuben McLachlan, age 22, and Michael Chandler, 26, received the distress call through the Surf Lifesaving Club’s WhatsApp group and responded with urgency. On arrival, they found that the men and their dogs had managed to escape the currents and reach shore near the club's premises. The quick-thinking lifeguards leaped into action, providing first aid. One of the men, showing early signs of hypothermia, received initial treatment from McLachlan who skillfully utilized an emergency blanket and a gradual warming process through a controlled shower at the club's facility.

The lifeguards' watchful care over the hypothermia-stricken victim continued until paramedics arrived, ensuring professional medical intervention ensued. This valiant rescue comes on the heels of a previous, heartrending episode at the same beach just over a week ago, where two promising young soccer players tragically lost their lives to a powerful rip current.

The Milnerton Surf Lifesaving Club has issued a firm caution regarding the precarious surf at Lagoon Beach while simultaneously commending its volunteer lifeguards for their unwavering commitment to public safety. In the wake of these events, the club is making a poignant call to the City of Cape Town to maintain lifeguard patrols throughout the year, instead of only during the busy summer months from September until Easter.

This incident serves as a stirring reminder of the unpredictability of the sea and the profound importance of vigilant and well-prepared lifeguards even during less frequented times of the year. The community's pride in their local heroes is palpable, as they have once again underscored the invaluable role these lifeguards play in securing the well-being of beachgoers in Milnerton and beyond.
