A Remarkable Journey Home: The Young Boy Who Walked 35km Sparks Outpouring of Community Support

The events unfolded when Lifalethu lost his bus ticket and had to walk from Simon's Town to his home in Khayelitsha, a journey of about 35 kilometers. Despite being turned away by the Golden Arrow bus service, the young boy did not lose heart and commenced his long walk home, normally a trip that should have taken him a mere couple of hours by bus. His family, accustomed to him arriving home by 5pm, only saw him at around 10pm that night.

However, the tale of Lifalethu's adversity quickly turned into one of community support. Notably, law enforcement officers found him in Harare, very close to his destination. They ensured he was escorted safely for the remaining few minutes home. His mother, Xolelwa Siba Mbasana, was overflowing with gratitude for those who rallied to secure Lifalethu's safe return, including the outpouring of concern from international onlookers from Zambia and Lesotho.

Not only did the community listen, but they also acted. Lifalethu was offered new shoes and free bus rides, so a similar incident could be avoided. His teachers from Simon's Town intensively searched for him, while a Muizenberg local offered his family a weekend getaway to recuperate from the stressful situation.

Yet, amidst this comfort, the family still sees an 11-year-old boy who has lost weight and who may not have fully processed this ordeal. They value the overwhelming community support, but remain attuned to Lifalethu's potential unspoken needs.
