Swift NSRI Rescue Sees Fisherman Safe after Kowie River Mouth Ordeal

In a dramatic turn of events that unfolded in the early hours at Port Alfred, a fisherman faced peril at sea, but thanks to a well-coordinated rescue effort, he was safely brought back to shore. The incident occurred when a commercial fishing ski-boat encountered a powerful incoming wave while navigating through the Kowie River Mouth to enter the open sea. A man aboard the boat lost his grip due to the boat breaching the wave and was thrown overboard into the choppy waters.

Reacting to the emergency, the skipper of the stricken fishing ski-boat made a crucial call to power the vessel through to safer waters, prioritizing the safety of his boat and remaining crew. This quick decision-making was in line with essential maritime protocols, ensuring that the situation did not escalate into a greater tragedy. Sadly, in the confusion that followed, the man overboard was lost from sight, despite him wearing a life jacket, showcasing the challenging conditions the crew faced.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Port Alfred's duty crew responded with urgency to the distress signals. The NSRI teams launched two rescue crafts, the Lotto Challenger and JetRib Spirit of Kenton, from their station 11 bases. In a swift operation, the rescue crew arrived at the river mouth at 06h54 to a scene of anxious anticipation.

In a fortuitous twist, another commercial fishing ski-boat, embarking on its journey through the river mouth, noticed the man stranded on the rocks adjacent to the Kowie River Pier. Demonstrating skill and precision, the NSRI reached the man within minutes, and by 06h55, he was secured onto the rescue craft.

Once ashore, it was apparent that the fisherman was not injured and required no additional assistance — a testament to the effectiveness of wearing life jackets and adhering to safety protocols when out at sea.

The NSRI commends the skipper of the casualty boat for his exemplary adherence to the safety procedures by not stopping in the tumultuous river mouth.
