The Sedibeng District has taken a stand against crime in schools through an innovative initiative, the Sedibeng District Cycle Tour Against Crime. Orchestrated by the Sedibeng District Community Safety Forum under the direction of Mr. Peter Kele, the event saw a collaborative effort by various stakeholders aiming to secure safe learning environments for the youth.
Running from July 15 to 19, 2024, this campaign engaged six schools within the Midvaal Local Municipality, focusing on pressing social challenges such as gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), substance abuse, gangsterism, bullying, teenage pregnancy, and other unlawful activities that are alarmingly common in educational facilities.
The campaign boldly carried the slogan 'DON'T BE A FOIL, CRIME IS NOT COOL,' with cyclists making their first stop at Meyerton High School. Here, Deputy District Commissioner Brigadier Nkhwashu led discussions that captivated the students' attention, addressing issues that directly affect their safety and well-being.
Throughout the tour, which was also attended by Springfield Special School, Assemblies of God College, New Hope Secondary School, Roshnee, and Ruster-Vaal High School, law enforcement officers pedaled alongside participants. They interacted with eager learners, disseminating messages that encourage law-abidance and expose the harsh realities and consequences of criminal activities.
The inaugural event at Midvaal Mayoral Park gathered significant figures, including MMC Chantal Gomes, Acting Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Rashaad Dawood Makhene, and MMC Mary Anne Myburgh, who emphasized the importance of community involvement in the protection of our young people.
Behind the scenes, the SAPS, the Department of Education, Correctional Services, and various other departments and organizations provided the backbone of this engagement. These entities are crucial in maintaining momentum in the fight against crime, especially in vulnerable environments such as schools.
By July 19, the tour had successfully swept through the targeted schools, leaving an impactful message. In his closing remarks, Mr. Peter Kele thanked the participants and supporters, underscoring the significance of a united community in the social upbringing and protection of its children. This initiative is a testament to what can be accomplished when various segments of society come together for a common cause.
The energy and interest displayed by the students reiterate the importance and impact such initiatives have on our future generations. It was a reminder that preventative measures, such as education and community policing, can play a vital role in steering young minds away from crime.
The cycle tour, chronicled and received with enthusiasm, serves as a pilot for potential future endeavors aimed at ensuring that our schools are not just centers of education but safe havens free from the influence of crime and violence.
