Escalation of Violence in Mpumalanga: Police Condemn Attacks in Homes and Taverns

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga has issued a stern condemnation following a series of violent incidents targeting residents in their homes and patrons at local taverns. These attacks have instilled fear and compromised the security of the communities in the region.

On the evening of May 26, 2025, a tragic event unfolded at Madras Trust near Calcutta, where a 79-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man were discovered brutally murdered in their home. According to reports, both victims sustained multiple stab wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical responders. The police are actively seeking leads, but the motive behind this heinous act remains unclear. Lieutenant Colonel Skhumbuzo Ceko, leading the investigation, has encouraged anyone with information to come forward to assist in solving this tragic case.

In a separate yet equally alarming incident on May 25, 2025, a violent outbreak occurred at several taverns in Tjakastad near Elukwatini. A group of individuals, suspected to be illegal miners known as zama zamas, allegedly launched an attack that left multiple patrons severely injured, with one currently in critical condition. The police have opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and are urging the community to help identify the assailants.

Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, expressed his outrage over these attacks, emphasizing that the police will not tolerate violence threatening the lives of innocent people. He has called upon the community to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting any suspicious activities and refraining from harboring criminals.

These recent incidents highlight the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in dealing with violent crimes in the region.
