In an effort to bolster community-led crime-fighting measures in the Eastern Cape, MTN has contributed a range of advanced technological equipment to the Community Policing Forum (CPF). This significant donation was part of an initiative to strengthen law enforcement capabilities and enhance community safety across the province. The official handover ceremony, which symbolized the partnership between MTN and local crime prevention units, took place at the Griffiths Mxenge Provincial Head Office on a Tuesday in 2025.
The equipment provided by MTN includes CIB jumpsuits, high-intensity tactical aluminum LED flashlights, Lenovo IdeaPads, push-to-talk (PTT) radios, mobile phone tripods, workstation PCs, and projectors. This donation is particularly targeted at supporting CPF initiatives in disadvantaged areas such as Mthatha and Lusikisiki, regions that are grappling with high levels of crime.
Mr. Len Zaal, a representative from MTN, officiated the handover alongside members of the CPF, including Mr. Masilela and Mr. Buys. The event was attended by various representatives from districts across the province, emphasizing the widespread impact anticipated from this initiative.
Major General ZM Dladla, Deputy Provincial Commissioner: Crime Detection, expressed gratitude towards MTN and highlighted the critical role of such partnerships in crime prevention. "We welcome this sponsorship and urge CPF members to utilize these resources wisely and responsibly. This is not just for us but for the community at large," Major General Dladla remarked during the ceremony.
Acknowledging the importance of collaboration between the private sector and law enforcement agencies, Deputy Provincial Commissioner: Support Services, Major General NHT Tito, added, “This partnership goes a long way in establishing a safer environment for all our residents. It's essential for us to work together to effectively address and mitigate crime in our communities.”
Responding to the donation, CPF members from various districts shared their appreciation for MTN's commitment to community safety. They recognized that the new equipment would significantly enhance their capabilities in crime detection and prevention, ensuring a strategic edge in community safety initiatives.
This initiative by MTN is part of a broader effort by corporate entities in South Africa to engage actively with community issues, especially in areas affected by socio-economic challenges. By providing state-of-the-art equipment, MTN is not only contributing to the immediate needs of crime prevention but also demonstrating a sustainable model for corporate involvement in community development.
