The National Sea Rescue Institute's (NSRI) Simon’s Town crew had a remarkably busy weekend, marked by a series of rescue operations in the treacherous waters of False Bay.

A terrifying incident unfolded at Kalk Bay harbour when a sudden wave surged over the pier, sweeping a toddler in a stroller and his father into the sea. The vulnerable child, fresh from being unfastened, clung to life in the cold water, kept afloat by his father's desperate grasp. Frantic onlookers watched as two brave locals plunged into the waves to rescue the pair. One had been enjoying a day at the pier with his family, and the other was an employee at the harbour. Working in tandem, they managed to save the child from a potential tragedy. A third Good Samaritan, also harbour staff, heroically joined to retrieve the submerged stroller and personal belongings.

The NSRI, quickly notified by eyewitnesses, was informed that the victims were out of the water but in desperate need of medical aid. CMR paramedics promptly provided on-site treatment to the child and father, followed by transportation for further care. They were treated for non-fatal drowning symptoms, and while the child's condition stabilized, the father remained hospitalized under observation.

In a testament to the unpredictable nature of the sea, this harrowing event was not the day's only challenge faced by the NSRI Simon’s Town unit. Concurrently, they received a distress call from two members of the local surf-ski community. A fellow surf-skier, an American visitor, had unfortunately collided with a reef, resulting in his surf-ski breaking in two near Roman Rock Lighthouse. Displaying quick thinking and camaraderie, fellow paddlers had banded together their surf-skis, clinging to the wreckage while drifting perilously close to a cardinal marker buoy.

The NSRI's Donna Nicholas rescue craft was promptly dispatched to the scene, where they found one paddler aiding the American whilst the other had continued towards the shore to alert the authorities. The NSRI rescue swimmers managed to pull the man from the choppy waters and retrieve the broken pieces of the surf-ski. The 52-year-old, suffering from mild hypothermia, was successfully rewarmed and thankfully required no further medical attention.

Further adept coordination by the NSRI was demonstrated on the same day when they responded to reports of a capsized Hobie-Cat off Glencairn. As they prepared to embark on the operation, word came through that the crew had managed to right the sailboat, averting the need for intervention.

Meanwhile, another incident at Muizenberg’s Bailey’s Cottage involved a sea kayak that had found its way onto the rocky shore. By the time NSRI arrived, they found the paddler safe on land, with no additional assistance required.

The weekend proved to be a challenging and demanding period for the NSRI Simon’s Town crew, who demonstrated exemplary rescue skills and unyielding commitment to the safety of both locals and visitors alike. Their courageous efforts and professional response ensured that all those involved in the maritime mishaps at Kalk Bay harbour and its surroundings were attended to, showcasing the importance of vigilance and community heroism in the face of oceanic dangers.
