According to the recording, a woman reported to the Lotus Atteridgeville Saulsville Civic Association that an ostensibly abnormal "strangely" red Coca-Cola beverage was sold to a child. This revelation led to an immediate response from the community resulting in a forceful intervention at the retail outlet.

During the incident, which was chronicled by video footage, residents could be seen examining and questioning the authenticity of various food products on the premises. Several items lacking visible expiry dates proceeded to fuel the community’s panic. The impromptu inspection by the community uncovered numerous expired food items, inflaming the situation.

The people of Lotus Gardens, accompanied by the Civic Association's leadership, notably Tshepo Mahlangu, were not mere bystanders and took matters into their own hands. The group demanded the temporary closure of the spaza shop, insisting on thorough inspection by law enforcement and health officials.

Tshepo Mahlangu addressed the gravity of the issue, hinting at the possibility of further raids on other spaza shops, especially those run by undocumented foreigners. These future operations are to be carried out explicit and systematically, Mahlangu emphasized, to prevent accidental looting or crime. This contentious issue has caught the attention of city officials previously, with Tshane’s MMC for Health Rina Marx spearheading an operation targeting food safety compliance in December. Despite these efforts, the community of Lotus Gardens suggests that much more needs to be done to protect consumers.
