The sorrowful tale of Granny Selepe's immense loss in the Boksburg explosion has left a lasting imprint on the community's heart. December 25th marks not just a festive celebration for many around the world, but a stark reminder for Selepe of the day her daughter, Neo Mokayane, succumbed to her devastating injuries. Her son-in-law, Ndumiso Mashaba, met a similar fate in the blast that occurred just one day prior.

Selepe mourns the absence of her beloved daughter, a young mother of two who at the time left behind Nyeleti, her three-year-old son, and Aluta, her five-month-old daughter. The explosion, a grave incident that grabbed the headlines, took place near a bridge in Plantation, where a truck burned, leading to an unforeseen catastrophe. The aftermath saw Mokayane pass away at Far East Rand Hospital, following grave burn wounds inflicted by the explosion.

What compounds the tragedy is not just the personal loss but the sense of abandonment felt by Selepe. According to her, the government and the truck company implicated in the incident have not offered the necessary support to assist in raising her two orphaned grandchildren. A year has passed, and their silence and inaction weigh heavily on her. She speaks not of a desire for monetary compensation - as no amount could replace her daughter - but of the need for basic support for the vulnerable little ones now in her care.

Despite the paucity of institutional support, goodwill from the community has shone through. Parkrand Primary School, alongside some individuals driven by altruism, came forward with donations of essentials to support the family. The school has exceptionally taken under its wing the responsibility of paying for Nyeleti's crèche.

Selepe vividly recalls the fateful day, piecing together how her daughter went from enjoying a regular Friday at her mother's place in Comet to being in the throws of a life-threatening situation in Plantation. The news of her daughter's and son-in-law's injuries came as a shock, especially given that Neo was initially conscious and seemed to stand a fighting chance at survival. However, the quick deterioration of her condition led to her untimely passing after she was rushed to ICU. The family was grappling with Ndumiso's death when the tragedy compounded with Neo's demise.

As the family continues to navigate through their grief, they recently held a tombstone unveiling ceremony for Neo, marking a poignant moment of remembrance and honor.

Selepe's experience highlights not only the pain that comes with loss but also the resilience and solidarity that can emerge within communities during times of sorrow. The stark contrast between institutional neglect and communal compassion underscores a narrative familiar to many facing loss and hardship.
