This call to action comes on the back of a series of life-saving interventions by NSRI operators in Stilbaai. Thanks to the prompt actions of the crew, who sprang into action armed with expertise and essential rescue gear, a potentially fatal encounter with the rip currents was averted for both adults and children involved.

On a routine training Sunday at Lappiesbaai in the Overberg region, the lifesavers’ vigilance was instrumental. Station commander Jean du Plessis recounted the chain of events that led to a successful double rescue of a man and a woman from treacherous currents. Their ordeal was bridged by the adept intervention of lifeguards to secure their safe return to shore.

The same unwavering focus of the NSRI team later contributed to the rescue of a young boy, again from the unforgiving grasp of rip currents. The reunion with his family on the beach, unscathed by the incident, underscored the importance of professional supervision in aquatic environments.

Not long after, a bystander's acute awareness and quick response saved a 12-year-old girl as she struggled in the strong currents at an estuary mouth. The subsequent medical aid provided by the NSRI crew helped to manage signs of non-fatal drowning, evidencing the full spectrum of vigilance needed – from preventive measures to aftercare.

Craig Lambinon, spokesperson for the NSRI, reiterates the importance of swimming at lifeguard-attended beaches and adhering to their directives.
