Cape Town Ramps Up Child Safety on Beaches with Identikidz Program

Cape Town, known for its picturesque coastlines, has long been a favored destination for locals and tourists seeking sun-drenched holidays. In the spirit of enhancing child safety during these bustling times, the Identikidz project continues to cement its role as a critical component of Cape Town's beach safety strategy.

Established in 2016, Identikidz has seen a growing appreciation among the public. The primary goal of the initiative is to offer peace of mind to thousands of parents and caregivers as they flock to the Cape's beaches. With over 90,000 children tagged last year across multiple locations, the success of the project speaks volumes โ€” approximately 400 lost children were quickly and safely reunited with their families.

The Identikidz project, timed perfectly for the peak festive season starting mid-December, involves a simple yet effective system. A registration kiosk, run by the capable staff from the City's Social Development & Early Childhood Development Department, awaits families at the main entrances of popular beaches. Here, children are registered and given waterproof wristbands with unique identification numbers linked to the caregivers' contact details.

The preventive nature of Identikidz has made it an invaluable asset to Cape Town's coastal areas. Its scope is comprehensive, covering beaches such as Big Bay, Camps Bay, and Muizenberg, among others, which are identified as high-traffic spots needing the most significant attention. Organized by the City's Disaster Risk Management Centre, the program focuses on areas where it can make the most substantial impact.

For children who wander off and cannot be immediately located, the wristband contact details enable a quick response. Loudspeakers across the beach facilities are used to announce lost children, and if all else fails, social workers from the Provincial Department of Social Development join in to assist with locating the child's family.

The sense of security delivered by Identikidz enables a more relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere on the crowded beaches. It underscores the city's commitment to public safety and underlines the careful consideration given to vulnerable populations such as children in public spaces.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to use the Identikidz system as an extra layer of safety to prevent their day at the beach from turning into a distressing event. With the continuance of this initiative, Cape Town enhances its reputation as a family-friendly destination that looks after the well-being of its most precious visitors, the children.
