In an emergency that disrupted traffic and raised alarm over road safety, the Huguenot Tunnel, a crucial passageway in the Western Cape, South Africa, was the scene of a hazardous materials incident. The incident began unfolding at approximately 12:15 pm on Saturday when a truck carrying hazardous materials, specifically nitric and amino acids, began leaking at the Huguenot Toll plaza. The Western Cape Mobility Department’s director of traffic and road safety, Dilin Lakay, was quick to inform the public of the danger posed by the leaking substances, emphasizing the health risks associated with inhalation of the acids.


Responding promptly to the hazmat incident was Highway Patrol officer Francois Carstens, who alerted the authorities, leading to an immediate action plan aimed at containing the situation. By the evening, the Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services had managed to bring the area under control. SpillTech, an emergency response company specializing in spill cleanup, confirmed that the leaked chemicals had been cleaned adequately.


Nevertheless, despite the swift response from emergency services and subsequent management of the spill by SpillTech, the tunnel and its toll gates remained closed for an extended period. The closure of one of the Western Cape's key transportation links inevitably resulted in heavy traffic congestion and inconvenience, with motorists being advised to divert their routes via Old Du Toits Kloof Pass R101.


In an update later received from Dilin Lakay, it was confirmed that the cause of the spill was the improper packing of the hazmat truck. The nitric and amino acids, which should not have been placed together, reacted and resulted in the leak. To mitigate any further incidents, two trucks were dispatched to the scene to separate the two hazardous materials safely, ensuring no additional risks to public safety.


Motorists affected by the incident were encouraged to exercise patience and follow the alternative routes provided. The necessary precautions and road closures demonstrated the urgency and severity of the event, highlighting the importance of stringent safety measures when transporting hazardous materials.


Following intensive clean-up efforts and safety checks, the Huguenot Tunnel was eventually reopened to the relief of road users and local authorities.
