Massive Success in Inter-Provincial Crime Operation: 547 Suspects Arrested

In a bold display of coordination and enforcement, the South African Police Service (SAPS) executed a high-impact inter-provincial operation across four provinces—Northern Cape, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and Free State—from November 26 to 28, 2024. This strategic move, spearheaded by outgoing Operational Commander Brigadier Hennie Van Rensburg, culminated in highly successful outcomes, underscoring the SAPS's commitment to maintaining law and order.

Kicking off simultaneously in all regions, the operation saw collaboration between various provincial representatives at the Joint Provincial Operational Command Centre located in Springbok, Northern Cape. Alongside Van Rensburg, notable participants included Brigadier Penny Pillay from the Eastern Cape and Colonel Nyuliwe from the Free State, all monitoring operations closely from this nerve center.

The focus of the operation was extensive, targeting the transportation and smuggling of drugs, illicit metals, and other contrabands across provincial borders. Moreover, officials kept a keen eye on the trafficking of protected species and illegal movement of fauna and flora.

The results were nothing short of remarkable. A staggering total of 547 individuals were apprehended for a wide spectrum of crimes, ranging from murder and assault to drug trafficking and theft. Additionally, enforcement agencies made significant inroads into tackling undocumented immigration, leading to 95 arrests under the Immigration Act.

In terms of seizures, the operation achieved significant hauls including counterfeit goods, dangerous weapons, and narcotics. Special raids in Eastern Cape led to the capture of approximately R5 million worth of contraband goods in Gqeberha and Kariega. Meanwhile, the Northern Cape saw the arrest of individuals in possession of stolen Telkom batteries, and in Western Cape, police intercepted drugs hidden within a passenger bus.

A substantial number of roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints were established, resulting in tens of thousands of vehicles and individuals being searched. Compliance inspections across the provinces also ensured adherence to safety regulations, particularly concerning the sale of illegal alcohol, where numerous fines were issued.

Major General Luntu Ngubelanga, representing the Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, hailed the operation as a testament to the strength and resolve of the SAPS and its partners. The commitment to extend these efforts, aiming at tightening the noose around illegal activities in and around provincial borders, remains steadfast.

This large-scale operation marks a significant victory in the ongoing battle against crime in South Africa, delivering a clear message about the government's dedication to upholding safety and security across the nation.
