AfriForum Urges Enhanced Security Measures Amid Rising Mozambique Refugee Crisis

In light of the escalating refugee crisis following recent election turmoil in Mozambique, AfriForum, a prominent South African civil rights group, is pressing the Border Management Authority (BMA) and other law enforcement bodies to intensify their efforts to curb illegal entries into South Africa. The instability in Mozambique has set off a chain reaction, compelling thousands to flee their homes, seeking refuge in neighboring nations, including Malawi, Eswatini, and South Africa.

Recent reports from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) shed light on the magnitude of this humanitarian crisis. According to the UNHCR, about 2,000 individuals have crossed into Malawi in the past week alone, with over 1,000 seeking shelter in Eswatini. The Malindza refugee reception center in Eswatini, initially equipped to handle 250 refugees, is now overwhelmed with over 1,000 displaced persons.

South Africa's challenges are equally formidable. The Lebombo port of entry, a focal point for migrants from Mozambique, recently witnessed the interception of a minibus smuggling 14 undocumented children between the ages of 4 and 14. This incident underscores the exploitation risks from criminal networks amidst the crisis. Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum's Chief Spokesperson for Community Safety, highlighted the urgent need for proper legal processes for asylum seekers to prevent such exploitation.

To fortify border security, AfriForum recommends a multi-faceted strategy. This involves reinforcing patrols and surveillance, particularly in the most vulnerable border areas, and enhancing the collaboration with local community watch groups that have been pivotal in monitoring these regions.

Moreover, there's a growing imperative for broader regional cooperation among Southern African countries to manage the flow of refugees effectively. It is crucial to strike a balance between security concerns and humanitarian needs, ensuring that all migrants can seek refuge through established legal frameworks.
