More than 200 cops proved their agility outside the thin blue line as they swapped their uniforms for running kits, bracing themselves for the thrill and adrenaline of the 42.2-kilometre Sanlam Cape Town Marathon. The initiative was a police endeavour to extend and highlight the importance of physical fitness among their ranks. National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, and Western Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, boosted morale by leading 52 members in the five and ten-kilometre Peace Run events.
Adorning bright blue T-shirts, the runners hit the tracks early at 6am at the DHL Stadium. With some taking on the 10K challenge, others conquered the 5K course. Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the Provincial Police Spokesperson, highlighted the 21 sporting codes in the SAPS, which include activities like athletics, rugby, and soccer, helping the organisation to promote fitness and holistic wellness.
'Finishing the Peace Run was exhilarating!' added Thembisile Patekile, who showed his resilience crossing the line within an hour and 24 minutes. Despite being winded and conceding dissatisfaction with his timing, Patekile expressed his enjoyment and commitment to the race and vowed to regain his running prowess.
Patekile also stressed how operational forces were maintaining a secure environment for the marathon's participants and supporters. 35-year-old Constable Siphamandla Mnguni, stationed at Umbilo police station, championed fitness among the force by finishing first in the male participants' line-up.
The marathon and accompanying events are expected to conclude this Sunday, bringing extensive road closures in Cape Town.
