Sedgefield Set for Enhanced Safety After Land Ownership Resolution

Residents of Sedgefield, a quaint town nestled on the Garden Route, can finally expect a safer living environment. This assurance comes after a significant breakthrough involving the Knysna Local Municipality which has taken responsibility for contested land on the Sedgefield dune.

For years, the plots numbered 2794 and 2553 have been a bone of contention. Initially owned by Landjong Beleggings, these plots were transferred to the then Sedgefield Municipality in 1993. However, in 1996, the governance of these lands came under the purview of the Knysna Local Municipality, following Sedgefield’s merger into it. Despite this changeover, a final transfer never occurred until recently, leading to numerous problems for the residents.

The dunes between Groenvallei and Smutsville saw the unsanctioned erection of several structures over the years. These unlawful constructions not only risked the stability of the dunes but also posed notable safety threats to the residents at the base. Moreover, the noise pollution from the area has long disturbed the peace of the surrounding community.

The civil rights group AfriForum, particularly its Knysna branch, has been pivotal in championing this cause. Their relentless advocacy brought the municipality to acknowledge their ownership and oversight of these plots. Speaking on the development, Marthinus Erasmus, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Southern Cape, highlighted the community's struggle and the anticipated positive changes. He lauded the efforts of Lulamile Mapholoba, the new Municipal Manager, for steering these changes.

Mapholoba’s proactive approach and cooperative demeanor have instilled hope that the municipality will sustain its commitment to resolving these long-standing issues. Furthermore, the fast response of Harry Hoff, Acting Head of Law Enforcement, in dealing with the infractions has bolstered confidence among the locals.

The resolution of this land dispute marks a crucial step towards restoring the environmental and social stability of Sedgefield dunes. It's an essential stride in ensuring legal compliance and enhancing the safety of the residents. AfriForum continues to urge community members to remain vigilant and engaged through various platforms available, as collective efforts can significantly amplify the impact of such governance improvements.
