A devastating fire swept through a building in Marshalltown, Johannesburg, leading to a tragic death toll of at least 74 inhabitants. The catastrophe, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, has left a cloud of mourning over the city, with a significant number of victims rushed to various hospitals.

Born into the fire-strewn chaos, survivor Wyseona Mapepa paints a haunting picture of his escape, stumbling through smoke to escape through a window. The distraught survivor, living in Johannesburg just a month, is still unclear about the whereabouts of his sister and brother-in-law.

Another survivor, James Hussein, shared his ordeal of waking to the sound of terrified screams and seeing the building on fire from his third-floor apartment. With his apartment filled with smoke, there was no escape other than jumping from the window to a pile of trash below.

Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda verified that the disaster-struck building at the corner of Alberts and Delvers streets, was owned by the city and had been rented to a non-profit organization. Emergency services were on the scene, battling the towering inferno throughout the night.

Amid the grim aftermath, family members and friends are frantically searching for loved ones. Jiya McReen, who's brother Youssef John is still missing, is fervently trying to locate him. The magnitude of the fire has taken the city by shock, unveiling a landscape of fear, uncertainty, and trepidation as this unfortunate event continues to unfold.
