In an era where medical innovation is paramount, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is emerging as a significant player in the treatment of cancer and chronic diseases. The recent 2024 World Conference on Traditional Medicine in Beijing highlighted the expanding role of TCM, integrated with Western medicine, in providing a holistic approach to health challenges.

Experts at the conference, like Zhang Haibo from the Guangdong provincial hospital of TCM, emphasized the dual-system approach that leverages the strengths of both TCM and Western medicine. Such integration is proving especially beneficial in cancer treatment, where TCM is utilized to enhance quality of life and extend survival, particularly for patients who cannot tolerate conventional cancer treatments like chemotherapy.

Illustrative of TCM's effectiveness, a case study from Shanghai University of TCM recounted a 61-year-old male patient with advanced lung cancer. His remarkable recovery post-integrated TCM and chemotherapy treatment underscores TCM’s potential in clinical settings. This integrated approach has not only gained popularity but is also credited with improving China's malignant tumor survival rates—from 40.5 percent in 2015 to 43.7 percent in 2022.

Chronic diseases, which pose a global health burden, are another area where TCM is making strides. These diseases—which include cardiovascular and cerebrovascular conditions—constitute a major health threat, especially in an aging population. Liu Liang from the Chinese Academy of Engineering highlighted TCM’s three-pronged approach focused on prevention, worsening control, and relapse prevention, aligning perfectly with global chronic disease management strategies.

The Chinese government has recognized TCM’s value, launching initiatives for TCM-based health management and chronic disease intervention as part of its 2017-2025 health guidelines. This governmental endorsement highlights the strategic incorporation of TCM in national health policies.

Moreover, contemporary applications of TCM are being enhanced by cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data. These tools are instrumental in decoding the complex mechanisms through which TCM operates, thereby facilitating a deeper understanding and broader application spectrum.

The conference also addressed the synergistic potential of TCM by urging a multidisciplinary approach. Prominent figures like Zhang Boli, renowned for his work with TCM in the fight against COVID-19, shed light on how TCM modulates immune responses, which is crucial in tackling both infections and chronic inflammations.

Critiques such as those from Rudolf Bauer of the European Pharmacopoeia Committee emphasize that discovering active compounds in TCM is challenging but vital, suggesting a holistic, synergistic approach to future TCM research and application.

In essence, the blend of traditional Chinese and Western medicine is crafting a new paradigm in medical treatment that promises enhanced outcomes for patients dealing with cancer and chronic illnesses, steering global health care towards more integrated and personalized solutions.
