In a shocking revelation, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has raised the alarm on a situation of life and death in the Eastern Cape. It has emerged that several individuals have tragically lost their lives allegedly due to the Eastern Cape Department of Health's negligence in settling their Telkom bills. The DA has urged the Department to break its silence and bring clarity to the public regarding these grave accusations. The party's impassioned plea for transparency is not unfounded; on the contrary, the Department's outstanding debt with Telkom has led to the suspension of landlines at pivotal healthcare facilities, including Cecilia Makiwane, Frère, Bisho, Butterworth, and Nelson Mandela Academic Hospitals, as well as the critical Eastern Cape Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Contact Centre.


The interruption in communication services couldn't have come at a worse time. These healthcare institutions, entrusted with safeguarding the well-being of Eastern Cape residents, now find themselves hamstrung, unable to respond effectively to emergencies. To make matters worse, the Department's decision to cut back on overtime pay for EMS staff has exponentially magnified the crisis.


The DA's sources have reported chilling consequences: at least two confirmed deaths, which include one maternal fatality. Distressing statistics have come to light, with shocking delays incurred in inter-hospital transfers — patients in dire need of immediate surgical intervention endured agonizing waits of up to 18.5 hours. Another blow landed on September 19 when the crucial fibre internet line at East London’s EMS Control Centre was severed, paralyzing the staff's access to emails and emergency communications.


In its strong condemnation, the DA accuses the Department of financial mismanagement and maladministration — criticisms that speak to a broader narrative of systemic dysfunction within the province's healthcare system. The ramifications extend beyond the immediate crisis; the DA warns that such systemic failures cast a long shadow over the feasibility of the proposed National Health Insurance (NHI) plan.


The DA has issued a clarion call for the Department to act swiftly and decisively to resolve the Telkom issue and address the spiraling budgetary shortfalls. The party insists on a proactive approach to avoid further unnecessary loss of life and to restore confidence in the Eastern Cape's healthcare system.
