In a heartrending incident near Plettenberg Bay, an extensive search operation has been underway after reports came through a community WhatsApp group about a man drowning along the Stilbaai coastline, between Robberg Nature Reserve and Kranshoek. A local resident from Kranshoek, believed to be 30 years old, raised the alarm after witnessing his 22-year-old friend being swept off the rocks by a wave while they were on the shoreline.

Racing against time and signal limitations in the remote area, the witness managed the challenging decision to leave his imperiled friend and seek help. After traversing a considerable distance to a farmhouse perched above the cliffs, the farmer there promptly informed Tech Security, which set off the chain reaction of emergency responses, including the NSRI Plettenberg Bay duty crew dispatch.

Upon receiving the distress call, NSRI Plettenberg Bay promptly launched their rescue crafts—The Courtenay's Rescue and Free Runner—and rushed to the reported location. Rescue divers, an EMS rescue squad, SAPS, an NSRI rescue vehicle, and the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter also converged on the scene to assist in the operations. Valuing the power of community involvement, Duran de Villiers, a local Good Samaritan, did not hesitate to make his way to the location from Knysna on his private boat equipped with an aerial drone to volunteer in the search efforts.

Even as the rescue team arrived amidst rough sea conditions at high tide and began their extensive search by sea, air, and along the shoreline, their efforts were to no avail. The missing man's clue to the incident remains undiscovered. The situation prompted the activation of SAPS WPDS (Water Policing and Diving Services), which is continuing the ongoing search. Concurrently, the SAPS are also investigating the circumstances of the incident.

The friend, deeply shaken by the turn of events and his futile attempts to save his companion, received medical attention for shock and was later transported to the hospital in a stable condition. As the search persists, the local community, family, and friends of the missing man hold onto hope and solidarity in these trying times.

In related news from the same day, the NSRI Plettenberg Bay medics and duty crew, alongside SANPark rangers, responded to separate incidents at Robberg Nature Reserve involving injured hikers. Each of these cases had more fortunate outcomes, as the injured were safely transported to the hospital for further care.
