A large-scale search and rescue operation has been ongoing since Monday afternoon when a 23-year-old man from Limpopo was reported missing in the choppy waters of Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal. The unfortunate incident occurred at Eastmore Crescent, a known hotspot for dangerous rip currents.

The Emergency call was made at approximately 13h15, immediately mobilizing a coordinated response from the KZN Surf Rescue Network. Leading the rescue efforts, eThekwini Municipal Umhlanga Surf lifeguards, along with NSRI Umhlanga rescue swimmers, were quick to arrive at the scene. They were soon joined by the NSRI Durban unit which dispatched its JetRib Rescue 5 Charlie craft along with additional rescue teams including Netcare 911 ambulance services, Marshall Security, and various police search and rescue units.

The young man, a university student from Limpopo, was reportedly visiting the Drakensberg with his brother on a holiday trip, making a pit stop at the beach before their planned return to Johannesburg. Sources claim the man decided to take a swim in the sea but found himself overpowered by rip currents. A bystander attempted a rescue, but retreated as professional lifeguards and rescue swimmers took over the operation. Despite the use of a Malibu rescue board, torpedo buoys, and even free dive searches, the search teams have yet to locate any sign of the missing swimmer.

Family members from Johannesburg have traveled to uMhlanga to join the vigil on the shoreline as search teams continue their efforts both on the sea and along the shore. The rescue operation has extended into nightfall, reflecting the urgency and commitment of all services involved.

As the community of uMhlanga and the family of the missing man hold on to hope, the tireless work of the rescue agencies underscores their dedication to saving lives, even in the face of challenging and dangerous conditions.
