The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is set to embrace a new chapter as it welcomes Mike Vonk to the helm as its Chief Executive Officer. With a family history woven into the fabric of the NSRI and a wealth of experience in both healthcare management and sea rescue operations, Vonk is set to steer the organization into the future, taking the baton from Dr. Cleeve Robertson in October 2024.

Mike Vonk is not a new face within the NSRI community. His engagement stretches over 14 years of dedicated service, evolving from his roots as a volunteer into leadership roles such as Deputy Station Commander, before taking charge as the Station Commander at the Wilderness Station (Station 23). Vonk’s ascent within the institute is reflective of his comprehensive understanding of the maritime rescue domain and his unyielding commitment to the vision of a water-safe nation. His hands-on experience in both proactive and reactive aspects of sea rescue further fortifies his ability to lead the NSRI.

Throughout his time at the George Regional Hospital, Vonk honed his executive skills, learning the ropes of managing a major healthcare provider as CEO for 13 years. This blend of his medical administration prowess and first-hand rescue insight makes Vonk an exceptional choice for guiding the NSRI through its future endeavors and challenges.

The NSRI recognizes the gravity of the role their volunteers and leaders play in serving the South African community. Sea rescue is not merely about saving lives in the present; it's about shaping a future where water safety is ingrained in national consciousness. The appointment of Mike Vonk signals an era charged with the existing knowledge of the foundational operations of sea rescue paired with a vision for growth and the amplification of preventative strategies.

As Mike Vonk prepares to officially take on his responsibilities in Cape Town, the NSRI is ensuring a seamless transition of leadership. Vonk’s predecessors, and in particular, Dr. Cleeve Robertson, who has served with distinction for over a decade, have set a high bar for courageous leadership and commitment. The institute extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Robertson for his service and reflects on his tenure with pride.

The NSRI's commitment to saving lives is coupled with its focus on changing lives and creating futures, both within the institute and in the wider community. Mike Vonk’s appointment is celebrated as a stride forward in this ongoing mission, as he brings with him not only a storied lineage in marine rescue but also a powerful synergy of expertise and passion.

In anticipation of October 2024, the NSRI community, supporters, and beneficiaries of its work look forward to Mike Vonk’s leadership and the continued prosperity and effectiveness of the organization under the guidance of a seasoned and dedicated veteran.
