Gwede Mantashe, the outspoken Minister of Mineral Resources & Energy stirred controversy at the Africa Oil Week conference held in Cape Town on Tuesday. He openly criticized foreign-funded, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), accusing them of weaponising environmental protection laws to blockade economic development in South Africa.

Developing his argument, Mantashe called for these NGOs to be registered and “made to declare their source of funding”. He posited that transparency is essential to ensure NGOs are accountable for their actions. His controversial statement adds to a growing debate about the role of NGOs and their impact on economic development.

A closer analysis of his comments suggests a defense of unionised workers in the fossil fuel industries, or possibly an attempt to safeguard the interests of multinational oil and gas companies. These companies, according to Mantashe, hold significant associations with local black empowerment partners who regularly donate to the ANC.

While the argument continues, many are curious to see what outcomes Mantashe's demands will yield, and how this development will shape the future of environmental protection and economic development in South Africa.
