In a recent Ordinary Council Meeting, the Executive Mayor of the Garden Route, Andrew Stroebel, delivered a speech that not only acknowledged past achievements but also outlined the future trajectory for the municipality. The Executive Mayor commenced his tenure with appreciation for the warm reception from the administration and the support from his mayoral committee.

Madam Speaker and the Council were reminded of the resonant themes of "Phenomenal Woman" by Maya Angelou, which underpin the municipality’s dedication to celebrating women who are pillars of equity, diversity, and inclusion. As part of this commitment, the municipality will showcase profiles of Women in Leadership during this year's Women's Month, emphasizing the remarkable role women play in transforming society.

Mandela Day's values of community service were eminent through the various initiatives undertaken, from blood donations to refurbishing community spaces, demonstrating the region's dedication to unity and service.

A significant announcement made by the Mayor was the investment in local skill development through the Skills Mecca Programme. This initiative has secured R36 million in funding and is set to train 400 learners, with partnerships expanding to accommodate skillsets in high demand, like cellular phone repairs.

The speech also reflected on recent challenges faced by the municipality, particularly the severe weather events in July, which disrupted lives and infrastructure. The Mayor lauded the GRDM Disaster Management Centre for their prompt response and relief efforts, suggesting a potential local disaster declaration to unlock further resources.

In terms of infrastructure, the addition of new vehicles to the yellow fleet and two disaster management trucks demonstrate the municipality's ongoing commitment to maintaining service delivery and enhancing disaster responsiveness.

Finally, the Mayor encouraged the community to engage with the Western Cape Premier’s Opening Address to gain insights into upcoming programs and provincial achievements.

This speech by Mayor Stroebel notably positions the Garden Route municipality as a leading example in promoting leadership, skills development, disaster preparedness, and community service, with several strategic initiatives and programs being rolled out to reinforce this agenda.
