The dedicated employees who maintain critical infrastructure such as electricity and water are calling for community vigilance and intervention as they navigate a growing labyrinth of risk.

The Electrotechnical Services and Civil Engineering Services (CES) departments, the backbone of George's utility network, have witnessed serious challenges, ranging from menacing confrontations to outright physical aggression against their personnel. Areas like Nelson Mandela Boulevard and parts of Rosemore have become particularly hazardous, leaving officials who manage outages and technical failures in harm's way, particularly after sunset.

In response, the George Municipality has tactically bolstered its presence in known danger zones, deploying additional staff and vehicles in the endeavor to preserve employee well-being. Daniel Greeff, Acting Director of Electrotechnical Services, highlighted the unfortunate need to postpone certain operations until daylight as a measure against potential harm, an action that incurs substantial operational costs and hampers efficient service.

Similarly, the CIS department is combatting threats to their labor force. Staff who frequent isolated pump stations, often situated in desolate locales, have been equipped with personal safety gear such as pepper spray and have access to emergency panic buttons. Nonetheless, Deon de Jager, Deputy Director of the Civil Engineering Services Directorate, admits that these precautions are insufficient shields for workers enduring perilous solo shifts.

Though armed responses and security measures have been intensified, the ongoing violence and theft jeopardize municipal capabilities. The Community Safety Division, under the supervision of Senior Manager Lee-Anne Meiring, has joined forces with law enforcement to counteract the unlawful circumstances that hinder public service, pledging to tackle head-on the malevolent actors disrupting their community's tranquility.
