Turmoil in Haldwani: Demolitions and Deadly Clashes Exacerbate Religious Fractures

The city of Haldwani, India, reeled from shocks of religious discord when a government demolition of a mosque and a school in a Muslim-majority neighborhood spiraled into deadly violence, claiming six lives and underscoring the fraught sectarian relations in the country. The Banbhoolpura area, marked by its cramped alleys and home to a considerable Muslim population, turned into the epicenter of conflict following the leveling of Mariyam mosque and Abdul Razzaq Zakariya school on February 8, 2023.

The demolition was carried out by municipal authorities, backed by a heavy police presence, on the pretext of the buildings being unauthorized structures. The obliteration of these significant community symbols sparked immediate unrest, with residents protesting the move that they deemed discriminatory. The fallout of the Haldwani clash has revealed stories of personal tragedy. Zahid and his son Anas became casualties of police firing amidst attempts to return home during the commotion. The response by authorities, including curfews, internet suspensions, and shoot-on-sight orders, further exacerbated the sense of siege experienced by the Muslim population. Accounts from victims' families point to a disproportionate and indiscriminate use of force by the police, though official narratives ascribe the forceful response to violent protestor conduct.
