Allegations of Lesufi, Zuma Plotting to Oust Ramaphosa Disputed by MK Party

Recent rumors swirling on social media alleging a covert political maneuver intended to oust South African President Cyril Ramaphosa have been starkly denied by the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party. The speculation suggested that former President Jacob Zuma, in collusion with Panyaza Lesufi, the Gauteng Premier and ANC provincial chairperson, were orchestrating a takedown of Ramaphosa’s leadership.

This speculative political drama unfolds against the backdrop of the African National Congress’s (ANC) disappointing electoral performance in Gauteng, for which Lesufi’s leadership has been scrutinized. Early in December, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal's provincial executive committees were evaluated by the ANC’s National Working Committee due to poor election outcomes, hinting at internal dissatisfaction and potential restructuring.

Adding to the intrigue, MK party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela categorically refuted claims of any secretive meetings between Zuma and Lesufi aimed at dismantling the current government structure under Ramaphosa. Ndhlela emphasized the baselessness of such allegations and voiced clear opposition to the existing Government of National Unity (GNU), which he likened to the controversial compromises of 1994.

In contrast, political sentiments expressed by Ndhlela underscored a notable discontent within portions of the ANC, labeling President Ramaphosa as a liability. Despite the denial of specific plotting, the broader discourse reveals fractures within the party concerning the direction and leadership under Ramaphosa.

ANC Gauteng spokesperson, Lesego Makhubela, supported the dismissal of these rumors, criticizing the perpetuation of what he deemed malintent in destabilizing party cohesion. He affirmed Lesufi’s solid rapport with President Ramaphosa, despite any alleged factional allegiances.

Political analyst Ntsikelelo Breakfast expanded on the internal party dynamics, predicting strenuous confrontations ahead particularly centered around the much-contested Government of National Unity (GNU). According to Breakfast, the upcoming National General Council (NGC) could become a battleground for leadership challenges within the ANC, potentially aiming at Ramaphosa’s presidency.

Ramaphosa’s critics argue that he has strategically delayed the NGC, which serves as a mid-term review and strategic recalibration platform between national conferences. During the pandemic lockdowns, disruptive plans by the radical economic transformation (RET) faction to leverage the NGC in their favor faltered, primarily due to the constraints of virtual engagements.

In this labyrinth of political maneuvering, while the intent to oust Ramaphosa remains a topic of fervent discussion among certain factions, the overall impact on the ANC's future electoral prospects remains uncertain. Analysts like Breakfast are skeptical of any significant recovery or benefit to the ANC, regardless of leadership changes.

With the ANC at a critical juncture, the unfolding events leading up to the NGC will be pivotal in defining not only the leadership but possibly the enduring ethos and unity of the party.
