Western Cape residents faced significant power disruption following a series of intense thunderstorms over the weekend which led to the collapse of seven Eskom power line towers. The collapse has plunged parts of the Central Karoo, Garden Route, and Overberg into darkness, prompting the activation of the provincial Disaster Management Centre to coordinate emergency support.
Anton Bredell, the MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, stated on Monday that a multi-stakeholder meeting has been convened to formulate a substantive response to the crisis. With no clear timeline for the restoration of the damaged power lines, plans are being put in place to ensure that essential services remain operational.
Critical infrastructure such as water purification systems, sewage plants, hospitals, and educational facilities are of the highest priority. Support in the form of water trucking, bottled water distribution, and the provision of generators is being considered as immediate measures to mitigate the fallout from the power outage. The situation is compounded by the weather forecast, which predicts heatwave conditions in the coming days in the Central and Klein Karoo, risking further pressure on water supplies and cold chain systems.
The affected towns in the Central Karoo include Leeu-Gamka, Merweville, Laingsburg, Sutherland, and Prince Albert. The Garden Route District's town of Ladysmith, as well as Napier in the Overberg District along with a large part of the rural farming community, have been significantly impacted.
The provincial government is undertaking assessments across the affected districts to tailor the emergency support to the specific needs of the communities. Direct communication with the communities will be established to keep them informed about the support and recovery efforts.
The provincial government is collaborating with Eskom and local municipalities to expedite the process of restoring electricity supply. Eskom, additionally, is dealing with power interruptions in areas of the Eastern Cape following another storm that struck on Sunday, 4 February 2024. The areas within the Alfred Nzo, Amathole, Chris Hani, and OR Tambo District municipalities have been the worst affected.
With continued cooperation between the provincial government, Eskom, and municipal authorities, there is a concerted effort to address the fallout of the power line collapse and provide immediate relief to the residents of Western Cape.
