Heroic Efforts Contain Shelley Point Hotel Fire as Community Mourns the Loss

In an astonishing display of bravery and efficiency, firefighters and aerial support teams successfully contained a devastating fire at the Shelley Point Hotel and Spa located in St Helena Bay on the West Coast of South Africa. The Saldanha Bay Municipality mayor, Andre Truter, praised the efforts of the Working on Fire teams and other support personnel who battled the flames for approximately eight hours on Tuesday.

The incident began just after 7:00 am on what would become a fateful day for the luxury establishment. The Shelley Point Hotel, a landmark treasured by the surrounding community and holiday-goers, succumbed to the fire which is suspected to have sparked in one of the kitchen facilities.

A concerted mop-up operation is currently in progress following the containment of the fire. The dedicated teams used an extraordinary amount of water to extinguish the flames, deploying 115 loads of 1,000 liters and 123 loads of 900 liters through aerial support services. The effort prevented the fire from spreading further and potentially impacting adjacent structures and natural areas.

Mayor Truter expressed his deep gratitude towards the firefighting teams that included Aircraft Support Vehicles ASV 14 with Fannie Cuamba and ASV 04 with Sydwell Mjomle. Their precision and skill played a critical role in backing up the aircraft fighters, curtailing what could have been an even more tragic event.

It was indeed a harrowing day as the cherished Shelley Point Hotel was reduced to ruins. Nevertheless, the response from the fire teams left those watching in awe.
