Ellesmere College Mourns the Loss of Long-Serving Headmaster and Esteemed Educator, Brendan Wignall

The Ellesmere College community is mourning the loss of a beloved figure, Brendan Wignall, who passed away following a battle with cancer. Brendan, who had been part of the independent school for over two decades, is remembered as a dedicated headmaster and a passionate educator whose influence extended far beyond the classroom walls.

Brendan Wignall joined Ellesmere College in 1996 and quickly became a cornerstone of the institution. His appointment as headmaster at the young age of 35 marked him as one of the youngest in the country to hold such a position. His commitment to the school is reflected in his impressive tenure of 28 years, making him the longest-serving headmaster in the college's history.

Under his leadership, the college experienced many years of success, with Brendan at the helm driving improvements and innovation in the educational offerings. His wife, Anne Wignall, who currently serves as the mayor of Ellesmere, shared the sad news of his passing on Facebook, highlighting Brendan's resilience and will to embrace life despite his cancer diagnosis in the autumn of 2021. Anne's heartfelt post revealed the depth of love Brendan had for his work, his family, and life itself.

Described as having had a 'gorgeous life,' Brendan's zest for life saw him fully engaged in a range of activities, including his upcoming plans to attend The Eras Tour with his daughter at Anfield.

The news of his passing was also reverently acknowledged by the acting headteacher of Ellesmere College, Mrs. V Pritt-Roberts. In an initial tribute, she expressed deep sadness and recognized the significant impact Brendan had on the entire college community.
