The tight-knit community of Woodridge College and Preparatory School is grappling with profound sadness after the untimely demise of Troy Schofield, one of its senior pupils. The tragic news of his passing was confirmed by the school’s head of Marketing and Communication, Lynne Niemann, in a heartfelt statement this past Friday.

Schofield, a Grade 12 student and revered athlete, succumbed to a brief illness, with his condition rapidly deteriorating soon after he was admitted to a hospital on Tuesday, leading to his untimely death just two days later on Thursday. The sudden nature of this event has cast a pall over Woodridge College, with the school community still reeling from the shock.

Known for his sporting prowess, Troy made a significant mark at Woodridge, having joined the school as a boarder in Grade 10. His athleticism shone through on the track, where he was celebrated for winning several races, earning him the admiration of his peers and respect of his coaches.

The school is acutely aware of the pain that Troy’s passing has inflicted on its community. Teachers, coaches, and pupils have been left heartbroken by the loss of such a vibrant and promising life. To help navigate through this grief, the school has taken steps to support its members by offering counseling services to any pupil or staff member in need.

Woodridge’s headmaster, Luke Hartley, reflects the school's sentiments by emphasizing the need for privacy and respect during this challenging time. "This is an extremely difficult time for our school community. We ask that everyone's privacy, especially that of the Schofield family, be respected as we all grieve this tragic loss together,” he implored.

A prayer service is scheduled to be held on Friday at the school, serving both as a tribute to Troy’s life and a space for collective mourning. In a measure of respect and to facilitate the grieving process, the College announced it would also close its doors three days earlier than the planned end of term.

This is not the first heartbreak for the Gqeberha school community this year. A similar bereavement was experienced in May when a Grade 5 learner from Clarendon Park Primary School also passed away after a short illness. Such incidents have highlighted the vulnerability of youth and the unpredictable nature of life, leaving communities to grapple with the pain of losing their young.

As the Woodridge community comes together in this moment of sorrow, they also celebrate the life and heart of a young man who made a lasting impression on all who knew him. Troy Schofield will be remembered not just for his accolades on the field, but for the spirit and joy he brought to the school and to the lives of those around him.
