South Africa Celebrates the Homecoming of Gerco van Deventer after Six Years in Captivity

The South African community is breathing a collective sigh of relief as Gerco van Deventer, a South African national held hostage in Mali for over six years, has been safely reunited with his family. The tireless efforts of Mohamed Yehia Dicko, a negotiator for the renowned humanitarian organization Gift of the Givers, has been celebrated for his unwavering commitment and determination in navigating the challenging path to Van Deventer's release.

Gift of the Givers acknowledged the extensive collaboration and assistance from intermediaries across Mali, Morocco, Mauritania, and Niger, which were instrumental in facilitating an unconditional release. Algerian State Security was also acknowledged for their critical role in accepting Van Deventer when transfers through two other countries failed. The organization extended its gratitude to the South African State Security for its cooperation throughout the process.

Dicko's personal sacrifices were highlighted as he committed weeks at a time in Mali, often at the expense of his family life and personal endeavors. During a critical stage of the negotiations, he faced a family emergency but remained in Mali to complete the discussion before returning home. His dedication was a testament to his character and resolve.

The local community, including teachers in Pelican Park and the Muslim Judicial Council, was also thanked for their support and advocacy during the trying period of Van Deventer's captivity. Shereen van Deventer, Gerco's wife, was commended for her extraordinary resolve and composure throughout the ordeal.

Gift of the Givers has reiterated the importance of the health review that Van Deventer underwent following his release. Previously, Van Deventer was abducted in Libya and later sold to the JNIM, an affiliate of al-Qaeda, in Mali. Initially, the captors demanded a ransom of 3 million dollars, which was negotiated down, but still beyond the family's means. Thanks to renewed efforts by Gift of the Givers, the negotiation process recommenced, ultimately leading to Van Deventer's freedom.

Gerco van Deventer's experience as the longest-standing South African hostage has come to a close just in time for the holiday season, marking a poignant moment of joy for his family and the nation. As Gerco embarks on his journey to recover and rebuild his 'new' life after a harrowing six years and one month in captivity, the country celebrates the triumph of perseverance and human spirit.
