The serene coastal town of Oyster Bay became the focal point of a high-profile murder case when 36-year-old Vanessa Van Rensburg was found dead in her boyfriend's home on Easter Sunday. Rob Evans, a prominent businessman and co-founder of Algoa Plastics, faces charges of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, and obstructing the course of justice.

During his recent bail hearing in the Humansdorp Magistrates’ Court, Evans painted a picture of a relationship filled with both affection and turbulence. Describing Van Rensburg as sometimes "insanely" jealous, Evans recounted instances where her jealousy would flare up, complicating their interactions. The dynamics of their relationship reportedly worsened with the involvement of alcohol, which Evans claimed played a "major role" in their disagreements.

Further complicating the narrative, Evans's lawyer, Paul Roelofse, introduced evidence from a toxicology report indicating traces of drugs in Van Rensburg's system, though Evans denied any direct knowledge of her using drugs, only acknowledging her past experiments with them.

Evans shared details of the days leading up to the tragic incident, describing how Van Rensburg had been unwell, complaining of sore lungs and allegedly fractured ribs from playing with her son. Despite these ailments, the couple proceeded to Oyster Bay for a brief holiday, which included drinking at a friend's braai.

In his testimony, Evans also referred to a February visit to a gynaecologist, where Van Rensburg was diagnosed as anaemic and advised to change her contraception methods due to mood fluctuations affecting their relationship.

This case has sent ripples through the community of Gqeberha, raising questions about the nature of personal relationships and the effects of substances like alcohol and drugs on domestic harmony. As the courtroom drama unfolds, the community and the country watch closely, hoping for justice for Vanessa Van Rensburg.
