Revival of Muizenberg Beach's Colorful Huts Marks a New Season of Tourism

In a significant boost to local tourism and heritage preservation, Cape Town's Muizenberg Beach huts, an integral symbol of the city's coastal appeal, have been meticulously restored. The facelift of these whimsical structures concludes just as the city anticipates a bustling festive season with throngs of tourists expected to grace the popular beach.

During a visit on Tuesday, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, alongside Councillor Patricia van der Ross, Mayco Member for Community Services and Health, inspected the completed work. This project signifies the successful collaboration between the City of Cape Town and the Friends of the Muizenberg Huts, a community organization dedicated to the upkeep of these seaside icons.

Mayor Hill-Lewis expressed his exuberance towards the timely completion of the restoration, which he believes will underpin a record-breaking tourism season. His gratitude extended especially to the Friends of the Muizenberg Huts for their staunch commitment to preserving a vital element of Cape Town's touristic charm.

The ambitious restoration project involved a comprehensive revamp of 26 double huts and 10 single huts, with work commencing on September 18 and reaching completion right on the cusp of the holiday period. Notably, the undertaking encompassed the redevelopment of the huts on Muizenberg East Beach Side, following a successful first phase on Surfers Corner Beach Side. A budget of R5.9 million underscored the city's dedication to preserving this captivating stretch of coastline.

Councillor Van der Ross noted the invaluable contribution of the Friends group, which not only maintained a synergistic partnership with the city but also secured a pivotal donation of Everite cladding material — crucial to the huts' refurbishment. This partnership has been instrumental in the project's success, reflecting a community's collective efforts to celebrate and conserve its cultural assets.
