Enhanced Security Measures at Table Mountain Over Festive Season

Table Mountain, a significant tourist beacon in Cape Town, is set to enhance visitor safety with new comprehensive measures this festive season. The initiative, backed by South African National Parks (SANParks), the City of Cape Town, the South African Police Service (SAPS), and several NGOs, intends to offer a secure and enjoyable experience to all who venture into this iconic landscape.

Spanning over 50 kilometers and covering about 25,000 hectares, Table Mountain National Park's vast and open-access nature presents unique security challenges. To address this, a multifaceted safety plan has been rolled out, significantly intensifying both aerial and ground surveillance.

At the heart of this new plan is the deployment of a helicopter from Kruger National Park, earmarked for aerial surveillance tasks throughout the holiday season. This strategic move provides an invaluable advantage, enabling rapid aerial responses to any incidents within the park's expanse. According to Managing Executive of Parks Property, Mokoena, these aerial capabilities are crucial. He notes a noticeable 62% drop in incidents this year compared to last, thanks in part to enhanced surveillance and response strategies.

On the ground, the park's safety approach is equally robust. Special Operations Rangers from the Sea, Air, and Mountain team are on full alert, backed by a proficient K9 unit skilled in tracking, rescues, and apprehending offenders, including those involved in poaching activities. Moreover, Table Mountain's collaboration with the City of Cape Town has resulted in the deployment of 32 officers from various safety and security clusters, alongside 120 new cadets each day — a clear testament to the commitment to safeguard the park and its visitors.

Commissioner of Public Safety, Robbie Roberts, emphasizes the comprehensive nature of the deployment, extending from early morning to late evening shifts. Integrating resources from metro police, traffic, law enforcement, and emergency services, the initiative promises a robust security blanket over the park during peak visitor periods.

Visitors are not left out of the responsibility loop. Authorities urge everyone to take personal precautions, such as traveling in groups and informing others of their whereabouts within the park. Reporting any suspicious activities to SAPS is also strongly encouraged.
