Sun International, a leading hospitality and entertainment corporation owning a portfolio of casinos, hotels, and resorts primarily located in South Africa, reported a 5.6% uplift in half-year core profit. According to the company's interim results to the end of June, the profit rose to R1.6 billion as business travel, both local and international, witnessed significant recovery.

The company's success amidst the current economic climate signifies a robust strategy aimed at maintaining a competitive position in the hospitality industry. The notable uptick in business travel emanates from the relaxation of COVID-19 travel restrictions and increasing vaccination drives that have encouraged more frequent business trips, thereby boosting the industry's recovery.

This profit surge also attributes to the notable recovery in Cape Town's hotel sector. Industry figures indicate that the hotel income and occupancies are now commensurate with prepandemic levels. This substantial rebound paints a positive picture of the sector's resiliency and its capacity for long-term sustainability post the pandemic.

Sun International's strategic focus on enhancing its services and value propositions have rightly placed the company as a major player in the country's travel and tourism landscape. Going forward, the company continues to invest in innovative approaches to guarantee customer satisfaction while ensuring adherence to all safety protocols, which will drive continued growth.
