A taxi driver in Kariega has come under police scrutiny following a deeply troubling road incident on Saturday that saw three local learners suffering injuries. These children, all students of esteemed educational institution Hoërskool Brandwag, were part of a group preparing diligently for the imminent SA Cross Country Championships.

In a turn of events that has sent shockwaves through the Kariega community, the taxi driver is alleged to have recklessly attempted to overtake a truck, only to collide horrifically with the learners. Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, police spokesperson, confirmed to Algoa FM News that the accident occurred near the high-traffic area of the Carinus and Graaff-Reinet crossing.

Further poking into the specifics, it has been disclosed that a case of reckless and negligent driving has been filed against the driver and is currently under intensive police investigation. In the wake of the harrowing event, Hoërskool Brandwag took to social media platforms to express their gratitude towards a host of first responders, local security, emergency personnel, and concerned bystanders who particularly distinguished themselves through their rapid assistance.

Whilst the injured learners were hastily transported to a nearby healthcare facility for exhaustive medical attention, others shell-shocked from the incident were released into the safer confines of their parental custody. Captain Janse van Rensburg has reassured the community that an extended statement will be released upon the conclusion of the in-depth investigation.
