In a significant legal and law enforcement drive in the Free State, two individuals, Lungelo Masiya, 34, and Mduduzi Shabalala, 38, have faced the rigors of justice at the Winburg Magistrate Court. Both were sentenced to three years' incarceration for possessing and dealing in substantial quantities of drugs, specifically dagga. Their arrest was a result of strategically executed intelligence operations by members of Operation Vala uMgodi on July 24, 2024.

During a carefully coordinated way-lay on the N1 National Road outside Winburg, officials intercepted Masiya and Shabalala along with 15 bags of dagga, totaling 346 kilograms, found in their possession in two separate vehicles; a Ford Ranger and a Nissan Hardbody. The sentencing of these foreign nationals marks a critical achievement in disrupting drug trafficking operations within the province.

Simultaneously, the operation cast a spotlight on the rampant illicit mining activities plaguing the region. A focused crackdown also led to several arrests related to illegal mining, painting a grim picture of the local unlawful exploitation of resources.

A 30-year-old male was apprehended at the Kudu Mine Old Shaft near the R30 Road, found in the act of illegal gold mining. A substantial 30.72 kilograms of gold-bearing material was seized during the operation. The reach of the law extended further, capturing a 36-year-old male at Western Holdings 05 Old Shaft. Here, law enforcement seized various tools including a shovel and strainer, alongside another 30.54 kilograms of gold-bearing material.

Additional raids at Stone and Allied near Welkom netted three more suspects, aged between 38 and 40, found processing gold-bearing material - a clear violation of national mining regulations. Here, 30.06 kilograms of gold-bearing material were secured. Moreover, another illegal mining bust in Phomolong Rheeder Park resulted in the arrest of a foreign national found with 25.29 kilograms of gold-bearing material, alongside several mining equipment and a round of rifle ammunition.

Drawing the judiciary into the broader efforts to curb this wave of crime, numerous cases were opened at Welkom Police Station. Charges spanned possession of suspected stolen gold-bearing material, unlawful possession of ammunition, trespassing on mining properties, and contraventions of the Immigration Act. These suspects are set for court appearances shortly, promising further legal outcomes.

This swath of legal and operational drive underscores the ongoing commitment of local law enforcement in tackling both illegal drug trafficking and illicit mining activities. These initiatives not only disrupt organized crime networks but also protect the region's vital resources.
