In a significant operation on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, the Hawks, South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, along with multiple other agencies, arrested six individuals in KwaZulu-Natal for their involvement in a cannabis distribution network. This operation was part of Project "Da Culture," a comprehensive investigation that began in 2021 aimed at dismantling illegal cannabis trade in the region.

The detained suspects, whose ages range from 33 to 59, were caught in a coordinated strike involving teams from Pietermaritzburg, Durban, Port Shepstone, and Richards Bay. The task force included the Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, the Provincial Priority Crime Management Centre, the Provincial Digital Forensic Investigation team, and the National Intervention Unit. These teams worked meticulously to gather evidence through undercover operations, where agents made controlled purchases from the suspects. This evidence subsequently led to the issuance of arrest and search warrants critical to the operation’s success.

During the arrest, authorities seized cannabis along with various related items, which they reported to have an estimated street value of around R379,170 ($21,000). The operation not only aimed to apprehend the suspects but also to disrupt the local illegal cannabis market significantly.

The suspects were charged with dealing in cannabis and are scheduled for a court appearance at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on February 13, 2025. The police have indicated that their investigation will continue, potentially leading to more arrests or the uncovering of a larger network.

Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Head for the Hawks, praised the successful operation. He highlighted the relentless commitment and cooperative effort of the involved units in tackling organized crime, stating, "The sustained efforts of our team and our partners in this operation are a testament to the determination and commitment of the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal."

This bust underscores the ongoing issue of cannabis trafficking in the region and reflects the proactive stance law enforcement is taking against organized crime networks involving drugs. The Hawks' initiative signals a stern warning to others involved in similar illegal activities, showcasing their readiness and capability to clamp down on drug dealers across South Africa.
